John William "Bill" Singer, son of John and Mary Singer, was born near Montrose, Missouri October 10, 1927. He passed away quietly May 10, 2010 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Missouri at 82 years of age.
Bill attended Montrose School through the 8th grade. He went to work at the Calhoun Hatchery until his enlistment in the Army Air Force. He served his country during World War II being stationed in Okinawa and the Philippines. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Montrose where he married Lavonne Shelton, his wife of 61 years, on October 5, 1948 at St. Ludger's Catholic Church in Germantown, Missouri. They have been life-long residents of Montrose, building their current home in 1955. Bill was employed by Peabody Coal Company as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement in 1977. The Singers were members of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montrose. Bill and Lavonne enjoyed traveling and had been to Canada four times, Mexico, cruised in the Bahamas, and had visited all but five of the fifty U.S. states, including Washington D.C. Bill was an avid gardener, sharing most of his vegetables with the senior housing residents and other senior citizens. He had a barbed wire collection which he had donated to the Clinton Museum; there were about 300 pieces of unique barbed wire in his collection. Bill also enjoyed fishing and had many fishing friends he liked spending time with..
Preceding Bill in death were his parents, his sister Ruth Jackson and her husband Ernest and a great-nephew Kevin Hopkins. Survivors include his wife Lavonne of the home; a sister-in-law Jeanette Cook of Appleton City, Missouri; two nephews, Mike Jackson of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Rick Cook and wife Martha of Appleton City; Missouri and two nieces Pat Hopkins and husband Ted of Boise, Idaho and Kathie Winger and husband Mark of Cheyenne, Wyoming.
