Marvin grew up in the Swartz area, attending elementary school in Bronaugh, later graduating from Nevada High School. During his high school years, he helped in his uncle's sawmill.
After graduating from high school, Marvin went into the Army. He served in Germany during the Korean Conflict on anti-aircraft detail. He was a dedicated member of the Montrose VFW Post #8820.
Marvin was united in marriage to Marjorie Havens shortly after his graduation from high school. To this union five children were born: Gary, Barbara, Linda, Carol and Mary Jo. They later divorced. He then married Ann Bearce and to this union another daughter, Kathy, was born.
Marvin lived in various towns in Missouri throughout his life. He farmed in the Nevada area for several years. He began logging in 1964. He bought standing timber, cut it, sold the logs to different mills, and then he trucked the logs to them. He continued logging after he moved to Montrose, Missouri in 1978. He owned and operated Bley's Firewood and Logging. He enjoyed everything about logging including building logging equipment and "tinkering" with equipment.
Marvin retired at the age of 65, but continued to do some logging. He enjoyed fishing for catfish and carp.
Preceding Marvin in death were his parents; his second wife, Ann; daughter, Mary Jo McCown (2011); brother, Lee Bley (1975); infant sister, Chelsea Bley and son-in-law Danny Lesmeister (2012).
