Leola Ruth Jagels' Obituary
The FUNERAL SERVICE for Mrs. Jagels will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Prairie City, Missouri on Monday, March 9, 2015 at 11:00 a.m.
The MINISTER for the service will be Pastor David Herald.
VISITATION will be held at Zion Lutheran School in Prairie City, Missouri on Monday, March 9, 2015 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
INTERMENT will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Prairie City, Missouri.
The family suggests that MEMORIAL contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church.
Leola Ruth Hammer Jagels was born on October 7, 1918, to parents Rosa Bartz Hammer and William Hammer. She died on March 6, 2015, at Appleton City Manor in Appleton City, Missouri.
Leola was the third of five daughters who grew up on the family farm near Prairie City, Missouri. After graduating from Rockville High School in 1937, Leola worked various jobs in the area, and then moved to Kansas City. During World War II, she worked at the North American Defense Plant building B-25 bombers. She was a true "Rosie the Riveter".
After the war, she and Gilbert Jagels married on December 16, 1945. They lived in Kansas City for two years then moved to the Hammer family farm north of Prairie City. They raised three daughters and one son. In 1968, they moved to Kansas City, and Leola worked in the kitchen at Norfleet Elementary School until she retired. Gilbert died in 1990, and Leola moved to Appleton City in 1992 where she lived the rest of her life.
Leola was an active member of church her entire life. She loved farming and gardening, sewing and quilting. In fact, she hand made a quilt for each of her grandchildren as a high school graduation gift. She enjoyed friends and family, playing cards, and eating out. She especially enjoyed spending time in the Ozarks.
Leola was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Kathleen Cook; three sisters: Lucille Bollweg, Ilene McCombs, and Betty Klinksick.
She is survived by children: Carol Fridley of Kansas City, Missouri, Kim Traw (Rick) of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Michael Jagels (Kristy) of Oak Grove, Missouri; a son-in-law Bill Cook of Independence, Missouri; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Wilma Dodds of Butler, Missouri.
