John Adcock Calhoun, 94, son of David Cooper Calhoun and Ethel Adcock, was born December 25, 1912 in Montrose, Missouri and died July 16, 2007 at his home in Montrose.
John A. Calhoun graduated from Montrose High School in 1932 and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Central College in Fayette, Missouri in 1936. On June 27, 1937 he married Helen Gertrude Brown of Odessa, Missouri. John met Helen while both were students at Central College. They have four children, Carolyn Sue, James David, Betty Ann and John William.
He was a member of the United Presbyterian-Methodist Church in Montrose. He owned and operated Calhoun Hatchery, farm and mill for many years. He was a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying for business and pleasure. John was a Boy Scout leader, a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He served on the Montrose school board for several years. He enjoyed working in his shop and spent many hours modifying and inventing useful tools. He once created a self-propelled airplane mover for his hangers. His family has many fond memories of his handy inventions.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Charles David Calhoun. He is survived by his wife of seventy years, Helen, of the home; two daughters, Carolyn Walker and husband, Norman, of Warrensburg, Missouri and Betty Lane and husband, Robert, of Clinton, Missouri; two sons, Jim Calhoun and wife, Jane, of Greenville, Michigan and John W. Calhoun of Montrose, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Steven Walker and wife, Marietta, of Warrensburg, Missouri, Julia McCaffree and husband, Mike, of Nevada, Missouri, John Lane of Columbia, Missouri, Susan Lane of Clinton, Missouri, Judy DeCorte and husband, Bob, of Essexville, Michigan, Betty Aardema of Springboro, Ohio and James Calhoun of Greenville, Michigan; eleven great-grandchildren, Caleb Thorns and wife, Brittany, of Lexington, Missouri, Shelby Thorns, Maddie, Carlie and Allie McCaffree all of Nevada, Missouri, Zach Lane of Clinton, Missouri, Callie, Jackson and Makenzie DeCorte all of Essexville, Michigan, Austin Aardema of Springboro, Ohio, Tyler Calhoun of Greenville, Michigan; two step-great-grandchildren, Bradley Chambers and Shannon Moore both of Warrensburg, Missouri; and one great-great-grandchild, Maddox Thorns of Lexington, Missouri.
