Joe Dean Pierce's Obituary
A MEMORIAL SERVICE for Mr. Pierce will be held Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Hill & Son Funeral Home.
VISITATION will be held preceding the service from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
The MINISTER will be Pastor Ron Beaton.
The family requests MEMORIAL DONATIONS be made to ACHS Alumni Scholarship Fund or Trinity United Methodist Church.
Joe Dean Pierce, 74, son of Lyle and Ruth Zwahlen Pierce, was born July 19, 1938 near Appleton City, Missouri. He transited quietly from this life to the next on December 9, 2012 completing his battle against lung cancer.
Joe graduated from Appleton City High School in the class of 1956. He served six years in the U.S. Navy during the Cold War with Fighter Squadron 14 aboard aircraft carriers U.S.S. Roosevelt and U.S.S. Independence as an aviation electrician. He was employed by Peabody Coal Company as a mobile equipment operator and later as an electrician at Central Missouri University in Warrensburg, Missouri. Joe served on the Appleton City board of alderman and for two terms as the Appleton City mayor. After retiring he worked as a volunteer school crossing guard and is remembered for surprising the children with treats and silly holiday costumes. He was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church and helped with the upkeep and church maintenance. Joe was a friendly man who never knew a stranger. He was always ready with a joke and always left everyone with a smile. He donated many hours of labor repairing and installing for those who asked for his helpful knowledge and skill.
Joe was married to Shirley Snyder Pierce in 1959 and to this union two children were born. Joe married Dorothy Phillips Pierce in 1988 becoming a loving stepdad to her son and daughter.
Preceding Joe in death were his parents and only brother James Pierce. Survivors include wife Dorothy, son Darryl Pierce and wife Teri, daughter Sandra Greufe, stepchildren Scott Phillips and wife Elizabeth, and Sarah Phillips, grandchildren Jessie Gifford and husband Paul, Megan Greufe, Seth Greufe and Kaleb Roth. He also leaves great-grandsons Lucas and Micah Gifford.
