Jimmy Lee Munger was born October 17, 1944. He grew up and spent many years in the Pittsburg and Chanute, Kansas area. During these years he spent his life as a farmer, welder, mechanic and supervisor at Rival Manufacturing, much of it all at the same time. He also owned and operated his own repair shop and car lot in Chanute. He became known for his ability to fix and repair almost anything. Because of his experiences, personality and attention to detail, he also became known for his perseverance and determination. He had a strong mind, a strong heart and a strong will, but was also fun at heart and had a strong and hearty laugh.
In 1993, Jim and Marilyn were married and they came to purchase 80 acres and make their home near Deepwater, Missouri. He continued as a supervisor with Rival in Clinton, Missouri and raised cattle, horses and alfalfa hay on the farm. Other work included making improvements to the farm and the homestead. The nice pond on the farm gave Jim time for his love of fishing.
About this time the grandchildren began coming into the world which gave Jim the opportunity to watch them grow, love them, teach them with firmness, show them how to do things and have fun. Jim loved his grandchildren with passion. He loved their visits and loved to give his attention to them. Other kids of the community began picking up on the attention Jim paid to them and his interest in them. He could always find something for the teenage boys to do when he wasn't helping them work on their old pickups or guns. He also gave the girls advice, demanded cookies or brownies and teased them at will.
In the past few years as Jim began suffering health problems, he realized the need to put his trust in God. On February 20, 2005 he and Marilyn put their full trust in Jesus Christ and were baptized at Ohio Christian Church. As with other things in his life, he put all his effort into serving the Lord. He developed a spiritual walk with the Lord and regularly shared his faith. He was instrumental in touching several family and friends with the gospel of Christ, while making lasting friendships along the way.
As various health problems cropped up, Jim was determined to fix them. He figured out how to exercise in his home and worked hard caring for flower beds, strawberries, the yard and garden as an aid to remaining healthy. On July 8, 2009 following a valiant fight for his health, Jim slipped peacefully into eternity to be with the Lord.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ora C. and Hazel Annette (Munger) Large, three sisters, Shirley Large, Linda Roberts and Kathy Large and a grandson Trenton Lee Munger.
Survivors include his wife Marilyn of the home, his children: Timothy Munger of Pittsburg, Kansas, Steve Munger of Miami, Oklahoma, Mariea Munger of Pittsburg, Kansas, James Munger of Pittsburg, Kansas, Mitch Munger of Iola, Kansas, Richard VanWinkle of Colorado Springs, Colorado, David VanWinkle of Snailwell, UK, Rebecca Lind of Edgerton, Kansas; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eight brothers, Kenny Munger of Texas, Larry Large of Iowa, Danny Large of Colorado, Don Large of Missouri, John Munger of Pittsburg, Kansas, Richard, Robert and Leo Large of Pittsburg, Kansas; five sisters, Sandy Mercado of Dallas Texas, Carolyn Smith of New Caney, Texas, Pat Large of Missouri, Frances Scott of Los Angeles, California, Barbara Garrison of Joplin, Missouri.
