Irene Esther Cornish, daughter of Raymond William and Amalia "Millie" (Pacha) Henzlik, was born in Appleton City, Missouri November 10, 1912. She departed this life February 1, 2006 at Medicalodge in Butler, Missouri at 93 years of age.
Irene attended primary and high school at the Appleton City Academy. She continued her education at Bolivar Baptist College and Central Missouri State College at Warrensburg, Missouri. Upon her graduation in 1932 Irene taught at several rural schools in St. Clair County. After her marriage to Caryll M. Cornish June 12, 1935 in Harrisonville, Missouri, Irene devoted her time to being at home and caring for her family which later included two sons. During the early 1960's she reentered the teaching profession and taught at Symington Elementary School in Ruskin Heights, Missouri until her retirement in 1976.
The Cornish's then returned to Appleton City, Missouri for a few years which allowed Irene time for her lodge duties as well as some travel time with Caryll. She was a member of the First Christian Church, a life member of Rebekah Lodge #724. She also held membership in the Alpha Delta Kappa Professional Sorority and the Retired Teachers Association. Irene moved to Rogers, Arkansas for a few years returning to Appleton City in 1999 where she lived at the Beech Street Apartments until ill health forced her to move to the Medicalodge in Butler, Missouri. Irene will be greatly missed by her family, friends and many acquaintances.
Preceeding Irene in death were her parents Ray and Millie Henzlik, her husband Caryll M. Cornish and one brother, Alfred Henzlik. Survivors include her two sons, Gerald Cornish of Elfrida, Arizona and Burton Cornish of Bentonville, Arkansas, two grandsons, Chris and Bret Cornish, one great-grandson Scot Cornish, one sister Mary Ellen Lewis of Gainesville, Florida and several nieces and nephews.
