FUNERAL SERVICES for Mrs. Calhoun will be held at the Montrose United Presbyterian-Methodist Church in Montrose, Missouri on Monday, April 21, 2014 at 1:00 p.m.

The MINISTER will be Reverend Ron Beaton.

VISITATION will be held from 12:00 Noon - 1:00 p.m. at the church, prior to service.

INTERMENT will be in the Montrose Cemetery, Montrose, Missouri.

MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS may be made to the Montrose United Presbyterian-Methodist Church.

Helen Gertrude (Brown) Calhoun, 97, daughter of James William and Anna Gertrude (Martin) Brown, was born August 19, 1916 in Odessa, Missouri. She passed away Friday, April 18, 2014 in Clinton, Missouri.

Helen attended Odessa school, graduating from Odessa High School. She then attended Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri, earning a teaching degree. She taught three years in Grain Valley Schools.

When Helen was attending college, she met John Adcock Calhoun, who later became her husband when they were united in marriage on June 27, 1937 in Montrose, Missouri at the home of his father, D. C. Calhoun. Early in her married life, Helen worked at the Calhoun Hatchery in Montrose. After the children came along, she devoted her time to being a wife and mother.

Helen was a devoted member of her church and was a member of WSCS (Women's Society of Christian Service), president of United West Methodist Conference, church choir leader and member, and she also taught Sunday school for many years.

Helen was a member of the Carpe' Diem Card Club, who played Somerset, a member of the Extension Club and she was also a den mother for Cub Scouts. She loved spending time on her flower beds, especially her roses.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Anna Beall Brown; brothers: Frances Brown, William Brown, George Brown and Harold Brown. Survivors include: children: Carolyn Walker (Norman), James Calhoun (Jane), Betty Lane (Robert), and John Calhoun; grandchildren: Steven Walker (Marietta), Julia McCaffree (Mike), John Lane, Susan Boden (Wayne), Judy DeCorte (Bob), B. J. Aardema, and James Calhoun; great-grandchildren: Caleb Thorns (Amy), Shelby Thorns, Maddie, Carlie and Allie McCaffree, Zach Lane, Callie, Jackson and Makenzie DeCorte, Austin Aardema, and Tyler Calhoun; 4 step great-grandchildren: Bradley Chambers, Shannon Moore, Hannah and Harrison Boden; 1 great-great-grandchild, Maddox Thorns; sister, Elizabeth Johnson (Richard) and sister-in-law, Carrie Brown.
