A GRAVESIDE SERVICE For Mr. Sumstine will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 5, 2016 at Appleton City Cemetery in Appleton City, Missouri.

OFFICIATING will be Harold and Patty Sumstine.

A MILITARY GRAVESIDE SERVICE will be presented by the Missouri Honor Guard - Naval group and the Appleton City VFW Post #11242.

MEMORIAL has been chosen by the family.  Anyone wishing to donate in Mr. Sumstine's memory should select a charity of their choice.

Harold Earl Sumstine, 88, was born December 31, 1927 to Harold Abraham and Gertrude Mae (Pratt) Sumstine in Kearney, Nebraska. He departed this life to be with his Lord and Savior August 1, 2016 at Bothwell Hospital in Sedalia, Missouri.

Harold's family moved to Salina, Kansas during his youth and he later graduated from Salina High School. Following school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving his country honorably as a gunner on fighter planes off the USS Leyte CV32 Aircraft Carrier during WWII. He also was in the National Guard after his discharge from active service.

On returning home Harold met and later married Hazel Marie Deller on November 20, 1948 in Dwight, Kansas. They were blessed with five children. He entered trade school learning watch making, owning and operating his own jewelry store until 1972 when he began work for J.C. Penney. Between 1972 and his retirement in 1988 he was the West Coast Field Supervisor for J.C. Penney.

After retiring Harold and Hazel made their home in Stover, Missouri. They loved to travel in their motor home researching genealogy of their family history. He had many hobbies such as ceramics, stain glass and working in his barn on various wood working projects. He was a skilled carpenter and with Hazel's help they built a sunroom on the back of their home. He enjoyed watching sports, the Chiefs and Royals where his favorite teams. Harold was a member of the 24 Carat Jewelry Association and the V.F.W.

Preceding Harold in death were his parents: one son, William Wayne Sumstine; one grandson, John Paul VanGoethem; one brother, Wayne Sumstine (Norma) and one sister, Joan Pogue (Jim). Survivors include his wife Hazel Marie Sumstine of the home; one brother William Sumstine of Minneapolis, KS; four children: Cheryl Ann VanGoethem (David) of Stilwell, KS, Harold E. Sumstine (Patricia) of Overland Park, KS, Arthur Leo Sumstine (Jeannie) of Olathe, KS and Kevin Dale Sumstine (Cindy) of San Clemente, CA; thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
