Born November 25, 1923, youngest son of Oliver Kilburn Crowder Sr. and Rosa Lee Davis on the family farm east of Appleton City known then as the Rosedale Stock Farms. He peacefully departed from this world there May 13, 2008. His entire life had been spent on this family farm being a Missouri Century Farm in 1979.
Haldor had been nicknamed by an older cousin as "Steve". He attended a one-room school near the farm. He graduated from Appleton City High School in 1941. He immediately began farming. Haldor married Edith Zeiler on September 9, 1945 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Appleton City by Rev. G.A. Moss. Their life together began 63 years ago on this family farm. They were blessed with two daughters Antionette Lee 1949, and Mary Ann 1958.
Haldor had farming running deep within his veins and breathed production agriculture and the farm life. Recollections noted his farm experiences and the adventures of the Crowder boys on the home place east of town. He and his brother, O.K. Jr. had Allis Chalmers Roto balers and became known as "experts". He had made many threshing runs with a grain separator in the community. Haldor was blessed in knowing his labor helped provide bounty and food for others. His labor was performed without any promise of growth or harvest to come. He planted with faith – in God, believing God would provide the needs to bring forth the abundant harvest. His ability to communicate enthusiasm, encouragement, and patience to others brought fulfillment. He felt in time his efforts would yield positive results and knew God would not be offended by excellence.
He extended himself to the community by serving two terms on St. Clair County R-2 School Board. Other areas were the Appleton City Road Board, St. Clair County CFAS, Church Board and a property trustee at Church of God Holiness where he faithfully attended. Haldor was also the Sunday School Superintendent and teacher for the church for many years.
In later years, he pursued antique tractor restoration of International Harvester, John Deere, and Oliver tractors. He enjoyed using them along with his threshing machine as part of demonstrations during the landmark year celebrations of Appleton City.
Haldor took much delight in his entire family and felt he owed God his very best having been blessed abundantly. He counted his wife, daughters, son-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as his richest and greatest blessings. His concern and compassion reached to his extended family, in-laws, nieces and nephews. He shared many stories of growing up as the youngest son, his threshing and farm stories from horses to tractors. He was awed by the wonder of God's handiwork and creation.
The delights of his eyes were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nothing was better than watching, talking, and being in the midst of the merriment. He felt his life richer because he experienced a bit of joy from them that belongs in Heaven.
Haldor's heavenly welcoming group included his parents, Oliver and Rosa Crowder, three brothers, O.K. Jr., David, and Allen and a nephew Don and many friends
Surviving are wife Edith; daughters Mary Ann, of the home, Antionette Lee and husband Larry Bracher; grandchildren Steve (wife Delores), granddaughter Annisa Bracher and grandson David Bracher; great-grandchildren Ethan, Emily and Evan Bracher all of Appleton City and a host of other relatives and friends.
He did not tell us how to live, he lived it – and let us watch him do it.
