Golda Lucille (Dillard) Brown was born September 29, 1913 in Eminence, Missouri to Minnie Mae (McCall) Dillard (1893-1989) and Charles Dillard (1893-1944). Golda was the oldest of a family of four children: Gillis Eugene Dillard (1916-1930), J.C. Dillard (1919-2005) and Nora Mae (Dillard) Hedgecoth (1922). She passed away peacefully February 8, 2011 at the age of 97.

Golda grew up early, cooking meals, ironing clothes and sewing. She made her own clothes when she was 13 years old. She attended Esther High School where she was a well rounded student. She won several track medals, was popular with her peers and graduated with honors in 1932. She was accepted to nursing school at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis but had to quit when she was needed at home after her father fell off the barn roof and broke his leg. She worked at a shirt factory and sent her money home to support her mother and younger brother and sister.

On June 1, 1934 Golda and Mark Brown were married in St. Louis, Missouri. They were blessed with four sons: Charles (1936), Taylor (1938-2010), Ron (1941) and John (1955). The Brown family owned and operated a farm near Glen Allen, Missouri where they raised their sons. In 1964 Golda and Mark bought a grocery store and meat market and with their youngest son, John, operated that business until Mark passed away in 1975. Golda sold the store and moved to Appleton City, Missouri where she has remained through the rest of her life. She enjoyed those years living a very active and happy life. Golda has been a member of the Baptist Church since 1926, the Order of the Eastern Star since 1942, the Baptist adult Sunday school class and the Appleton City Prairie Queen Garden Club and enjoyed them all.

Golda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Mark Brown; one son, Taylor Brown; two brothers, Gillis Eugene Dillard and James Charles "J.C." Dillard; two daughters-in-law, Joan Pona Brown and Mary Mitchel Brown; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.

She is survived by her sister Nora Mae Dillard Hedgecoth of Desloge, Missouri; three of her sons, Charles M. Brown of Friedheim, Missouri, Ron Brown of Appleton City, Missouri, and John Brown Kansas City, Missouri; ten grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren.

Throughout her life, Golda enjoyed her family, travelling, friends and her grandchildren. She gave unconditional love to her family and left a beautiful memory. Her smile touched the hearts of all the wonderful caregivers at the Appleton City Manor and everyone who knew her.
