Esther Louise Jagels was born in Mountain Park, Oklahoma, on September 22, 1915, the second of eight children of George and Minna Jagels. At the age of seven she moved to Prairie City when her father was called to be pastor of Zion Lutheran Church. She graduated from Zion Lutheran School in Prairie City and from Rockville High School in 1933. The summer after she finished high school she attended the teacher's college in Warrensburg and received a teaching certificate. She then taught all eight grades at Zion Lutheran School for four years, having three of her younger brothers as students. In June of 1937 she married Ernest Vogt of Prairie City. They moved to Kansas City in 1941, and Ernest worked in the steel fabrication business. Esther taught for twenty years at the Kansas City Foundation School for mentally-challenged children. After Ernest retired they moved back to Appleton City in 1983 where they spent their remaining years. She has been an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Appleton City, the Tuesday Bible Class, and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. For many years she was active with the quilting group at church, and she personally made many quilts over the years.

Esther and Ernest were blessed with two children, Karen and Doyle, and six grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, her sisters Viola Guthormsen, Elnora Roberts, Laura Fischer, and her brother Gilbert Jagels. She is survived by her brothers Garnold Jagels and wife Charlotte of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Marvin Jagels and his wife Velda of Rockville, Erwin Jagels and his wife Deloris of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, sister-in-law Leola Jagels of Appleton City, sister-in-law Alice Vogt of Kansas City, daughter Karen Wagenknecht of Clearwater, Florida, son Doyle Vogt and his wife Barbara of Denver, Colorado, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Since Ernest's death in 2004 she has been a resident of Countryside RCF and the Manor in Appleton City where she spent many happy days and made many close friends.
