Elton James Long was born in the rural Ohio, Missouri community July 5, 1922 to Lou Burley and Jessie (Landis) Long. He passed away August 31, 2009 in Ellett Memorial Hospital in Appleton City, Missouri at 87 years of age.
Elton married Leta Ruth Keeton, his wife of 70 years, January 4, 1939 in Ft. Scott, Kansas and to this union two sons were born. They made their home in the Ohio, Missouri community where Elton farmed, drove a school bus and always found time to play baseball on the Ohio team. From 1953 to 1963 they ran the Ohio Store selling groceries, feed and gas. In 1963 they moved to Appleton City where Elton worked as a mechanic at Zink Ford Motor Company until he retired. After his retirement he and his son, Nelson, opened their own shop where he worked until 2004. During that time, he kept busy keeping cars running for his grandkids. Leta and Elton loved going to the rodeo and camping, especially when the grandkids got to go with them. After recovering from a near fatal illness in his later years, he enjoyed having Bill pick him up every morning and take him to the coffee shop.
Preceding Elton in death were his parents; one sister Nellie at age seven; three brothers, Howard of Brighton, Colorado, Harry "Short" of Lowry City, Missouri and Russell of Butler, Missouri; his son Nelson of Appleton City and a grandson Randy Sietzer of Marshfield, Missouri. Survivors are his wife, Leta, of the home; son Bill Long and wife Sandra of Appleton City; grandsons, Jeff Long and wife Katie and their children Jenna, Kyle and Peyton, Mark Long and wife Misty and their sons Jarrett and Jace of Appleton City, a granddaughter Ronda Stout and husband Dick and their daughters Sarah and Baily of Rockville and Abby and husband Travis Sage of Appleton City. Also, grandchildren Robin and husband Rick Fleischer and family of Butler, Danny Snyder and wife Julie of Appleton City, J.R. Snyder and wife Mel and family of Belton, Kim and husband Daniel Siegismund and family of Rockville and Shelly Klinksick and family of Appleton City.
He will be missed by nieces, nephews and many friends.
