Elnora Minna Jagels Roberts, one of eight children, was born on September 25, 1918, in Natoma, Kansas to Rev. George Henry and Minna Marie Schlicher Jagels. She passed away peacefully on August 20, 2009, at Ellett Memorial Hospital, Appleton City, Missouri at the age of 90. Elnora was baptized by her father on October 13, 1918. She was received into communion at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Prairie City, Missouri through the Rite of Confirmation on March 20, 1932 by her father, who served as a pastor at Zion for many years. Her confirmation verse is Genesis 15:1, "Fear not: I am thy shield and thy exceeding great reward." Elnora possessed two baptismal certificates, one in English and the other written entirely in German.
Elnora graduated from high school and moved to St. Louis, Missouri where she worked for H & R Block. She married Ralph F. Roberts on August 23, 1952, and they lived in St. Louis at 9847 Boulder Court for many years before moving to Appleton City in September, 1985, upon Ralph's retirement.
Elnora and Ralph were inseparable for most of their forty-nine years together. The two spent many happy hours playing golf, traveling and visiting friends and relatives. The last years of their marriage were difficult as Ralph's illness progressed to the point where he needed to be cared for at the nursing home. Elnora insisted on visiting him at least twice daily and devoted herself to making sure he was well cared for. Unable to have children of her own, Elnora had a soft spot in her heart for the little ones and they in turn were drawn to her like a magnet. She had a unique way of making each child feel special and loved as only she could. As a result, she became an adopted "Grandmother" to many lucky children.
Elnora was the ultimate hostess and took great pride in entertaining in the Roberts' household where there was always a constant stream of guests. She also kept busy with numerous activities including knitting warm caps for missions, volunteering her services wherever needed, attending weekly Bible study, reading, sewing and quilting. Ralph could never understand why she enjoyed cutting material into small pieces just to sew them back together again!
Elnora taught Sunday School for many years while living in St. Louis and she was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid in Appleton City. She was so proud of the fact that she was a 'ninety-year old lady'! Her love and compassion for people was evident through her quiet actions, kind, soft-spoken words and unselfish ways. People were instantly put at ease with her wonderful smile and infectious laugh, and she could light up a room with her presence. Elnora was dearly loved by those who were blessed to have known her. In our grief and sorrow, we find comfort and strength in the assurance that she is now at peace with her Lord and Savior.
In addition to her parents and husband, Ralph, (January 11, 2002), those preceding her in death include two sisters: Viola Jagels Guthormsen (Harry); Laura Jagels Fischer (Gerhard); a brother, Gilbert Jagels; and a brother-in-law, Ernest Vogt.
She is survived by one sister, Esther Jagels Vogt; a sister-in-law, Leola Hammer Jagels, both of Appleton City; her younger brothers: Garnold Jagels (Charlotte) residing in Colorado; Marvin Jagels (Velda), Rockville; and Erwin Jagels (Deloris), Overland Park, Kansas; and a multitude of nieces, nephews and friends.
