The SERVICE for Effie will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 7, 2018 at Hill and Son Funeral Home in Appleton City, Missouri.

The MINISTER will be Pastor Tony Reynolds.

VISITATION will precede the service at the funeral home from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.

INTERMENT will be in the Appleton City Cemetery.

The family suggests any MEMORIAL donations be made to Appleton City Landmarks and may be left at the funeral home.

Effie E. Hill, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2018 at the Guest Home Estates in Chanute, Kansas at 97 years of age.  She was the eldest of six children born to Lester Ray and Mary Bell (Wheatley) Spangler in Pleasant Hill, Missouri on September 28, 1920.  She spent many hours of her childhood working on her family farm.  Effie then graduated from Pleasant Hill High School in 1939.  Following the completion of her education, she married her high school sweetheart, Glenn Hill, her husband of 64 years.  Shortly after their vows, Glenn joined the United States Army during World War II and she took employment in St. Louis in the war industry while he was away, being one of the original "Rosie the Riveters".  After the conclusion of the war Glenn and Effie moved to Gladstone, Missouri, where two children were born: Richard and Glenda.

Effie devotedly raised her children while Glenn worked as a traveling funeral plan salesman throughout the United States and was also employed at D.W. Newcomers Funeral Home in Kansas City, Missouri.  In 1968 they moved to the Appleton City area, owning and operating the Dari Burg where Effie cooked and waited tables.  Purchasing Eckhoff Funeral Home in 1972, they owned and operated the funeral home in Appleton City until Glenn's death in 2008.  Nevertheless, she continued serving the public until shortly after her 92 ^nd birthday, when she became physically unable.

Throughout her life Effie defined the phrase, "hard work".  She did much of the business management, custodial duties, and funeral directing, while also assisting with a small cattle operation and always keeping her home in perfect order.  Gardening and canning were two of her favorite hobbies.  All of her family enjoyed the quality fruits and vegetables she raised.  She proved an incredible host and cook, serving enormous family dinners complete with the finest homemade foods.  Apart from this, Effie dearly loved traveling, and during her retirement she went through 49 of the 50 states with Glenn and her cherished traveling companions, Don and Barbara Donnohue, Harry and Jean Walker and Bill and Millie Burton, among others.  She further devotedly attended and served the First Christian Church in Appleton City all her life, where she especially enjoyed the quilting club with her church friends.  Effie was the rock of her family for nearly 70 years; her guiding presence, wisdom, and loving words will be deeply missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Mary Spangler; husband, Glenn Hill; son, Rick Hill; and three brothers, Donald (Bonnie), Paul (June) and Larry Spangler; and brother-in-law Pete Lee.

Effie is survived by her daughter Glenda and husband Kevin Jones; grandsons: Eric Twente and fiancée Kim Rosnick and David Hill and wife Alexandra; granddaughter Betsy Barney; daughter-in-law Jeannette Hill; two great-grandchildren, Ali Taylor and Jake Taylor; a sister, Eulala Lee; and one brother, Bill Spangler and wife Faye; a sister-in-law Brenda Spangler, along with many other friends and family, who loved her dearly.
