Dorothy Brownsberger passed to eternal life at her residence at The Rose Estates in Overland Park, Kansas on January 21, 2008…she was one day shy of her 89th birthday. She was a woman who loved deeply and was deeply loved in return. She lived her faith.
Dorothy (nee Duewel) was born January 22, 1919 to Minnie Lillian Wally and Wallace Carl Duewel in Kansas City. She was raised in and spent most of her life in the Montrose, Missouri area. Minnie, her mother, was a homemaker and Carl, her father, operated a mechanic shop and was an accomplished Harley Davidson motorcycle racer. Dorothy's father passed when she was only six years old and she treasured her memories of him. Dorothy attended Montrose grade school and high school.
Dorothy loved to dance and she met her future husband one rainy evening at a Montrose dance. Since it was raining, LeRoy Brownsberger, a farmer, did not have to work and was able to attend the dance. The story goes that Dorothy was trying to sit on the edge of a table, started to fall and LeRoy caught her and reassured her, "I won't let you fall." They fell in love and married on February 22, 1941. They were blessed with two children, Marsha and Walt. Dorothy and LeRoy enjoyed 63 years of marriage.
Dorothy may have been small in stature but she was strong and never ceased to amaze her family. During this last year's Christmas celebration, Walt asked Dorothy to bless us and the meal the family was about to share. She promptly said the blessing in German, then she repeated it in English. She was so proud to have been given that honor and her family was so proud to have her as their "Queen Bee."
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband on October 7, 2004. Dorothy will be missed by her daughter, Marsha Thornburg of Appleton City, Missouri and son, Walt Brownsberger and his wife Penny of Overland Park, Kansas. She is also survived by her six grandchildren Edie, Brenda, John, Bill, Donna and Nick. There are nine great-grandchildren Jon, Nicole, Madeline, Joseph, Noah, Marcello, Mariella, Christopher and Francesca. She is also survived by her brother, Wally Duewel and his wife Mary of Kansas City, Missouri; a brother-in-law Martin Brownsberger of Montrose, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.
