Obituary

Catherine Sue "Cathy" Atwell, 73, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026. She was born on May 20, 1952, to Hazel and Turney Lum Jackson.  Cathy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose presence filled every room with strength, honesty, and love.

She had a heart for family and a home that reflected it. Her door was always open to those in need, and she selflessly provided a safe, loving place for her nieces, nephew and her stepsister. Her family was a constant source of pride and happiness in her life.

Cathy was first married to Dennis Leroy Davis Sr., with whom she shared five children. In 1987, she married Robert Lee Atwell, and together they built a life filled with love and shared work. Throughout her life, Cathy worked in various roles, including Church's Fried Chicken and Nevada Regional Hospital. She enjoyed assisting her husband with his various jobs, and they were longtime self-contractors with UPS.

Cathy had a deep love for the simple joys in life. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking, and spending time with her family and friends. She had a special place in her heart for animals of all kinds—from her goats and chickens to even the occasional abandoned skunk, she cared for them all. She never missed a chance to enjoy a good cup of coffee, no matter the time of day, and loved sharing those moments with her grandchildren—often making sure they were just a little "wired" before heading home.

Known for her feisty spirit, Cathy was never one to hold her tongue. She had a huge heart and an even bigger personality to match. You always knew exactly where you stood with her, and that honesty was one of the many reasons she was so deeply loved. Her strength, humor, and authenticity leave a lasting legacy in all who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Atwell; her parents, Hazel and Turney Jackson; her son, Dennis Leroy Davis Jr.; her grandson and great-granddaughter, TJ and Taylor Leonard; her son-in-law, Thomas Conard; her granddaughter, Natasha Bailey; and her brother, Arthur Lee Shimp.

Cathy is survived by her children: Lonnie Keith Davis (wife Noel), Catherine DeAnn Graham (husband Kent), Denise LeAnn Nations (husband Ryan), and Rhonda Sue Conard; as well as many beloved grandchildren: Steven, Ashley, Lauren, John Cody, Taylor, Bree and Michael; Christopher and Casey; Christen and Brandon; Terry and Thomas; Ashton, Chance, Dakota and Thomas (children of Dennis Leroy Davis Jr.), along with numerous great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her siblings: Elinor Beck, Janet Jackson, Tammie Recinos, Rayetta Self, Hazel Shimp, John Shimp, William Shimp, and Robert Jackson.

A Celebration of Life will be held on May 16, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at City Hall in Schell City, with dinner to be provided by First Baptist Church.

Cathy will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
