Bessie Aletha (Snethen) Foster, 94, the third child of Forest Elmer and Ivy Mable (Snyder) Snethen, was born June 12, 1917 four miles east of Appleton City, Missouri. She passed away at Ellett Memorial Hospital on February 27, 2012.

Bessie grew up in St. Clair County Missouri, and after losing her mother at the age of four, her grandmother Allie moved in with the family to help raise the children. On August 26, 1938 Bessie married Joel J. Foster in Butler, Missouri and they were blessed with five children: Barbara, Nancy, Shirley, Larry and Karen.

In December 1943 Joel entered the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in January 1945. In March of 1949 they purchased their first home, a farm six miles east of Rockville, Missouri. The family attended Mt. Zion Methodist Church near their home and on June 28, 1953 Bessie joined the church and was baptized with Joel and two of their daughters.

Bessie and Joel raised two large gardens for as long as they were able. Bessie was a long time member of the Mt. Zion Club.
In 1997 she was diagnosed with cancer and had become a long-time survivor. They sold their farm in October of 2010 and moved to Appleton City, Missouri. Then due to failing health they moved into the Appleton City Manor in November of 2011.

Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Lawrence Snethen and Floyd Snethen, a sister Thelma Ginter, a great-grandson Joseph A. Canseco and a son-in-law Clifford Blackwell. She is survived by her husband Joel Foster; their children: Barbara and Leslie Carpenter of Appleton City, Missouri, Nancy and Douglas Bradley of Grandview, Missouri, Shirley and Ron McEwan of Appleton City, Missouri, Larry and Tisha Foster of Butler, Missouri and Karen Harvill of Gainsville, Georgia; ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
